I feel like the week has gone by so quickly!! The days have felt long in terms of how much work we have in the classroom, but we have gotten so much accomplished. Today, we finished writing our interview questions and had them reviewed by one of the faculty members. Dr. Kesey reviewed ours, and it took over 2 hours to get through 3 interview guides...and we have 7 interview guides total! So, I'm not really sure when we're going to go over the other 4. Our interviews start on Monday and we are going to be interviewing healthcare workers in the orthopedic and surgical wards at KCMC.
After class, we went home to drop off our stuff and then as a group we walked to Dr. Stacey's house for our reflection session. We reflected on the week, letting out our frustrations as well as sharing our positives, and we snacked on samosas and other foods. The session took about an hour, and then we called some taxis to pick us up and take us into town.
While we were waiting for the last taxi to arrive, we were standing in a circle on the side of the road. We definitely stood out, but we always do, and never before have we been approached by someone making goat noises at us. Well, that happened today--this lady literally made goat noises as she walked past us (all different pitches, and very accurate too). It was so weird, and I couldn't help but laugh.
The whole time we were walking through town, boys would approach us trying to sell us their jewelry or paintings. Part of me feels bad for them and I want to buy stuff because this is their job, but the other part of me just gets annoyed because they are definitely selling their items for rip-off prices just because we are white and they think we don't know any better. So, I didn't buy anything from the street vendors today but they still followed us around until we went to dinner.
I did buy some stuff though! We just found out we aren't allowed to wear pants to class anymore, so I bought a dress and two skirts! I also bought some jewelry for myself and a couple gifts for other people. Overall, it was a good shopping day!
When we were done shopping, we went to this restaurant called "IndoItaliano". Everyone wanted a break from the African food, so we went with Indian/Italian. I ordered chicken parmesan, but it wasn't very good. I'm not sure if it was cheese on top of the chicken... it kind of looked like mushrooms. I was too afraid to taste it and find out. Honestly, I wasn't expecting anything spectacular and I probably wouldn't go back there to eat again, unless the rest of the group wanted to.
After dinner, we all just went back to our different homestays. We're going on a coffee tour tomorrow! So that should be fun!
Highlight of today: Getting good prices on some skirts!
