June 4

My morning was pretty interesting to say the least.  First, mama casually dropped the news that Delke has malaria.  Second, I got hit by a car (not very hard, I’m okay!  And it was bound to happen at some point).

When I woke up, mama asked me how my night was and if I slept okay.  I told her I slept well and asked how her night was.  She responded: “It was okay, but Delke is sick.  He has malaria.”  I was not expecting that.  “Yeah, but that’s just part of the lifestyle here” she said.  I felt so bad and didn’t really know how to respond.  I went into the bedroom and Adrienne looked just as shocked as I was as she asked, “Did mama just say Delke has malaria??”  Later on I found out that Delke gets malaria once a year.

After having tea and getting dressed, Adrienne and I began our walk to school.  We were walking behind a car that was turning right out of a driveway, and all of the sudden the car backed up into me.  I was carrying a purse on my side, and that got hit first.  But I got some dirt on my elbow! Hahhaa.  Well, I guess it’s not really a haha statement... but in retrospect, it is kind of funny.  So yeah, that happened.

In class today, we finished working on our concept map and we submitted a list of stakeholders and potential interview subjects to the teachers.  After, we completed a stakeholder analysis chart and had the rest of class to research.  For lunch, Ume, Becca, and I got fruit from one of the restaurants on campus and brought it back to the courtyard.  I had a whole mango (which was pretty good, but not as good as in the Philippines).

After class, four of us attempted to do insanity but we ended up stopping midway and resorting to an ab workout combined with a chat sesh.  I also felt pretty dizzy for some reason and was pretty exhausted all day, so I was not in the mood to workout.

When I walked home, Adrienne was outside playing with the kids so I joined for a little bit.  Mama left to go and have a beer (even though Delke was home sick), and Adrienne and I stayed outside until she was home.  I was holding Yackie (not sure how to spell it but it’s pronounced Jackie with a Y), one of the babies, and mama goes: “Oh, you have a baby!  Rachel come to Tanzania.  Rachel get baby.”  Mama was a little drunk I think…

Taken from inside of my mosquito net!
